As a military wife, Joanna Slay moved 13 times in 17 years and became accustomed to unpacking broken collectables, dishes and sentimental items each time the moving boxes were opened. She began to save the shards, thinking one day her creative impulse could somehow salvage the broken remains.
Her artistic background in graphic art, exposed a love of color, texture and design in print, fabric and china. Those broken bits and pieces offered a new creative direction for Joanna.
Slay discovered she has an innate ability to look at a discarded object and see a new beginning. She gives these found objects a new home and does it with her signature whimsical flair in the mixed media and mosaic art she creates.
Be aware of the environment
I want to create the unusual. The vision and esthetic of my work is inspired and influenced by my personal mantra: REDUCE, REUSE, RECREATE!
I want everyone to look at their purchases. Is it a single use item? Can it be recycled? Can I repurpose the packaging?
Slay studied at Mississippi University for Women and South Buckingham University, UK. She is a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artist (SAMA) and The Arts, Hancock County and Ocean Springs Art Association.
